It is with heavy hearts that South Africa and the world bids Madiba farewell. Civil rights icon, Nelson Mandela died Thursday night at age 95, as a result of recurring health issues he had been battling with over the years.
Mandela was a revolutionary figure. A legend. The epitome of altruism. He sacrificed his freedom so his people could be free. His anti- apartheid movement not only liberated South Africa from oppression, it also radically changed the lives of Africans as a whole, and the world in general.
Although he is no longer physically with us, his legacy will forever transcend his death. He has left the world a valuable gift – the wisdom to discern the true meaning of freedom, and how to attain that freedom. “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others,” he once said.
R.I.P Madiba.
